At last! A Makaton course covering Christian faith signs, songs, and activities for use in churches and activity groups.
Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs, and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall, and organisation of language and expression. With Makaton, signs are used, with speech, in spoken word order. This helps provide extra clues about what someone is saying. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Using symbols can help people who have limited speech and those who cannot, or prefer not to sign.
(BSL is a separate language used by deaf people that does not rely on spoken words).
The day will cover:
- What is Makaton
- Why do we use Makaton
- Learn stages 1 of Makaton’s Core Vocab
- Importance of interpretation
- Signs we use for faith
- Practical singing & signing activities
It doesn’t matter if you have done some signing (even BSL) before – this course is for everyone. Becky George the trainer, is a regional Makaton tutor & signed at the ONE festival last year for Livability.
You will leave the training feeling enthused and confident to use Makaton in your setting.
Bring your own lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please note there is no onsite parking but there are roads around the church you can park on.
A certificate will be given to each attendee.
Please get in touch if you have any access requirements, including sensory adaptations.
Children under 16 are not able to attend.
